Hey everyone, my partner and I are planning a two-week road trip starting in Naples, heading down through Calabria, and taking the ferry over to Sicily. We want to balance iconic sights with some hidden gems, but we are a bit nervous about driving in the bigger cities and navigating the ZTL zones. Could anyone recommend must-see stops along this route and share some practical tips for renting a car and tackling Southern Italian traffic?

Naples driving is honestly terrifying for first-timers, so definitely pick up your rental car *after* you finish exploring the city. As for Calabria, make sure you stop in Tropea! The cliffside views and beaches are incredible. Just watch out for narrow village streets and automated ZTL cameras.

Regarding ZTL zones: do not enter them under any circumstances unless your hotel has registered your license plate. The fines come in the mail months later and are a nightmare.

If you want to skip driving stress in the big cities, you might want to read about train alternatives like Eurail Pass vs Point-to-Point Tickets: Which Saves More Money on Multi-Country Tours, though for Southern Italy and Sicily, a car is definitely better for the coastal roads.

When taking the ferry to Sicily from Villa San Giovanni, book your tickets online in advance during peak season to avoid long queues at the port.

Once you are in Sicily, spend a few days around Taormina and Syracuse, but definitely rent the smallest car possible—parking spots are ridiculously tiny!

Don't let the driving scare you too much. Just drive defensively, keep an eye on aggressive local drivers, and always park in official garages rather than on the street.

Make sure your rental car has full zero-deductible insurance coverage. Scooters come out of nowhere in Naples and Sicily, and having that peace of mind is priceless.
