Southeast Asia Backpacking Route: Recommended 1-Month Tour for Beginners

Hey everyone! I'm planning my very first solo backpacking trip to Southeast Asia and I've got roughly one month to spare. I want a mix of culture, nature, and a bit of a social scene, but I don't want to burn out by moving every single day. What is the classic beginner-friendly route that covers the highlights without feeling totally rushed? Any advice on which countries to combine and where I should start would be hugely appreciated!

For a first-timer with one month, sticking to the classic Thailand and Vietnam combo is your best bet. Start in Bangkok, head up to Chiang Mai, fly down to Vietnam for Hanoi, Hoi An, and finish in Ho Chi Minh City.

Don't try to squeeze in three countries! Do either Thailand + Cambodia or just Thailand and the north of Malaysia. Moving too fast leads to burnout instantly.

Bangkok is the absolute best place to start. It's a massive culture shock, but super easy to navigate and meet other solo backpackers. Spend 3-4 days there before taking the overnight train north to Chiang Mai.
