Northern Spain Road Trip: Exploring Basque Country, Cantabria, and Asturias

Hey everyone! My partner and I are planning a two-week road trip across Northern Spain this coming September, focusing on the Basque Country, Cantabria, and Asturias. We definitely want to spend a few days eating our way through San Sebastián and Bilbao, but we are also looking for recommendations on charming coastal villages and scenic mountain routes in Picos de Europa. Does anyone have a suggested itinerary or hidden gems we shouldn't miss along the Green Spain coast?

San Sebastián is an absolute dream for foodies. Make sure you do a pintxo crawl in the Parte Vieja—start with the anchovies at Bar Sport!

When you are in Cantabria, definitely stop by Comillas to see El Capricho, a whimsical villa designed by Antoni Gaudí. It's totally worth the detour.

Llanes in Asturias is a fantastic coastal base. The town itself is charming, and nearby Gulpiyuri beach—an inland beach in the middle of a green meadow—is surreal.

For the Picos de Europa, staying in Potes is a no-brainer. It's a gorgeous mountain town and the base for hiking or driving up to Fuente Dé.

Don't skip the cable car at Fuente Dé in the Picos. The views from the top are breathtaking, especially if you catch it on a clear morning.

In Bilbao, aside from the Guggenheim, wander around the Casco Viejo and try a 'carlota' pastry at one of the local bakeries.

If you love cider, head to a sidrería just outside of Gijón or Oviedo. Pouring the cider from high above your head into a wide glass is an experience in itself!

San Juan de Gaztelugatxe (the dragonstone from Game of Thrones) is right between Bilbao and San Sebastián. Be prepared for a lot of steps, but the views are worth every drop of sweat.

Ribadesella is another stunning coastal village in Asturias where the Sella river meets the sea. Great seafood restaurants right along the estuary.

September is honestly the best time to go. The weather is still warm, but the heavy summer crowds have thinned out significantly.

Make sure your rental car has enough horsepower for the mountain switchbacks in the Picos de Europa. Some of those roads get pretty steep!

Santillana del Mar in Cantabria feels like stepping right back into the Middle Ages. Cobblestone streets and stone towers everywhere.
