Canadian Rockies Road Trip: Driving Banff to Jasper via the Icefields Parkway

Planning a 4-day road trip from Banff to Jasper along the Icefields Parkway this upcoming September and looking for advice on must-see stops. September is honestly the best time to visit! The crowds start thinning out compared to July and August, and the fall colors on the larch trees are incredible. For a quieter hike, definitely check out Parker Ridge; it gives you amazing views of the Saskatchewan Glacier without the massive tour bus crowds.

For Lake Louise and Moraine Lake, you really need to book the Parks Canada shuttle in advance. Do not rely on parking at the actual lots because they fill up by 5:00 AM. Make sure you download your offline Google Maps or maps.me before you leave Banff. There is zero cell service along almost the entire length of the Icefields Parkway, which catches a lot of people off guard.

If you want a hidden gem stop, pull over at the Cirque Peak viewpoint or hike up to Wilcox Pass. Wilcox Pass gives you incredible angles looking down at the Athabasca Glacier and is way less crowded than taking the Ice Explorer bus tour.

Four days is the absolute sweet spot for this drive. It lets you take your time instead of rushing. Stop at Mistaya Canyon and Bow Lake—they are right off the highway and totally worth the short walks.

Watch out for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk. Elk and bighorn sheep love licking the salt off the road, and hitting a large animal can total your rental car. Give them plenty of space and stay inside your vehicle.

Pack layers! September weather in the Rockies is completely unpredictable. You could experience 20°C and sunshine in the afternoon, and then wake up to snow flurries the next morning, especially near the Columbia Icefield.

For parking at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, get there either really early (before 9 AM) or later in the afternoon around 4 PM when the big tour buses have mostly cleared out. The interpretive trails across the highway are free and honestly better than the paid glacier tour.

Another great tip is to fuel up completely in Banff or Canmore before you start. There is only one gas station along the entire 230 km Icefields Parkway at Saskatchewan Crossing, and their prices are notoriously high.
