Yucatan Peninsula Road Trip: Exploring Mayan Ruins and Cenotes Away from Crowds

Planning a two-week road trip across the Yucatan Peninsula next month, but I really want to avoid the massive tour bus crowds at places like Chichen Itza and Coba. Does anyone have recommendations for lesser-known Mayan ruins and secluded cenotes where we can actually experience some peace and quiet? Also, what are the best car rental agencies to use out of Cancun airport that won't try to scam us with mandatory local insurance fees?

Skip Chichen Itza entirely and head to Ek Balam instead. You can still climb the main pyramid there, and it's infinitely less crowded, especially if you arrive right when they open at 8 AM.

For rental cars at Cancun, booking through Gecko Rent Car or Hertz Mexico with third-party zero-deductible insurance already purchased online is usually the best way to avoid those nasty counter surprises.

Instead of the overly packed tourist cenotes, check out the ones near Homun. There are dozens of them down a dirt road, and my friends and I had a stunning subterranean sinkhole completely to ourselves for two hours.

If you want incredible ruins without the tour buses, make your way to Calakmul deep in the jungle. It takes some driving, but standing on top of the giant pyramids surrounded by howler monkeys is unforgettable. It actually gave me similar vibes to planning ancient historical site itineraries elsewhere in the world.

Whatever you do, do not rent from the ultra-cheap brands like Firefly or Mex Rent A Car at the airport. They will quote you $5 a day online and then demand $40+ a day for mandatory TPL insurance at the desk.

Xpuhil and Becan down in the Rio Bec region are fantastic, quiet Mayan sites. We spent an entire afternoon exploring structures completely swallowed by the jungle without seeing another soul.

For secluded swimming, look into Cenote Taak Bi Ha near Tulum. It's much quieter than Dos Ojos, beautifully lit, and the crystal-clear water makes for amazing snorkeling away from the masses.

Planning a long driving route through Mexico takes some patience, but it's totally worth it. The freedom of having a car reminds me of how liberating it is to map out independent trips, much like organizing multi-week international travel itineraries on your own terms.
