Cappadocia and the Turquoise Coast: Combining Central and Southern Turkey

Planning a two-week trip to Turkey this fall and really want to experience both the fairy chimneys of Cappadocia and the stunning beaches of the Turquoise Coast. What is the most efficient way to travel between these two regions without spending half the vacation on buses? Are there reliable domestic flights, or would renting a car for a specific leg of the journey make more sense? I would love to hear recommendations on how to split the time and balance the contrasting landscapes.

For a two-week trip, I strongly recommend splitting your time evenly: 5 to 6 days in Cappadocia and the remaining time along the Turquoise Coast.

Domestic flights are definitely your best friend here. Turkish Airlines and Pegasus run frequent, cheap flights from Kayseri (ASR) or Nevşehir (NAV) down to Antalya (AYT) or Dalaman (DLM), usually with a quick stop in Istanbul.

We did this exact itinerary last October. The weather in both places was absolute perfection—warm enough for the beach in Kaş, but cool and crisp for morning hot air balloons in Göreme.

Fly from Kayseri to Antalya. Do not attempt to take a long-distance bus unless you have endless patience and a lot of time to spare.

Once you arrive on the coast, renting a car is essential. Public transit between the smaller coastal towns like Olympos, Kas, and Fethiye is okay, but having a car lets you stop at secluded coves.

Spend 5 days in Cappadocia (stay in a cave hotel!), fly to Antalya, pick up a rental car, and spend the rest of the time driving west toward Fethiye.

Fall is arguably the best season for Turkey. The summer scorching heat is gone, and the tourist crowds have thinned out significantly.

Make sure to book your balloon flight for your very first morning in Cappadocia. If it gets cancelled due to wind, you'll have subsequent mornings to try again.

For the coastal portion, Kaş is the ultimate base if you like a charming, bohemian town vibe with incredible diving and nearby ruins.

Just a heads-up that domestic luggage weight limits on Turkish carriers can be strict (usually 15kg), so pack light if you're hopping on those internal flights.
