Costa Rica Eco-Tour: 10-Day Itinerary for Rainforests, Volcanoes, and Beaches

My partner and I are planning our first trip to Costa Rica and want to experience the best of its biodiversity, adventure, and relaxation in 10 days. We are hoping to visit a cloud forest like Monteverde, see Arenal Volcano, and end our trip relaxing on a nice beach. Does anyone have a well-balanced eco-tour itinerary that minimizes long driving times while maximizing wildlife spotting and sustainable lodging?

This sounds like an incredible trip! For a first-timer, doing Arenal, Monteverde, and a beach like Manuel Antonio is the classic route. Just make sure you use a private shuttle or the Jeep-Boat-Jeep transfer between Arenal and Monteverde to keep travel times reasonable.

We did a 10-day eco-tour last year and stayed at Arenal Observatory Lodge. It's right inside the national park, incredibly sustainable, and you can see toucans and coatis right from your balcony. Highly recommend it!

Monteverde is magical, but definitely pack layers because the cloud forest gets chilly and damp in the evenings. For your beach leg, check out Tamarindo if you want surf, or Nosara for a more laid-back yoga vibe.

Make sure you book a night walk in Monteverde. Spotting tarantulas, sleeping toucans, and glowing fungi with a local naturalist guide was the highlight of our entire trip.

Ten days goes by so fast! I would suggest spending 3 nights in Arenal, 3 nights in Monteverde, and 3 nights in Manuel Antonio. That leaves you one buffer day for travel so you aren't rushing.

Don't skip the hanging bridges in Arenal or Monteverde. Walking through the upper canopy gives you a completely different perspective of the rainforest biodiversity.

We rented a 4x4 for our Costa Rica trip and loved the flexibility, but driving can be intense with the potholes and narrow bridges. If you want a more relaxing, hands-off vacation style, guided transfers are definitely the way to go.

Manuel Antonio is great for wildlife—we saw sloths, white-faced capuchins, and iguanas all within a couple of hours walking the national park trails. Just watch out for the raccoons on the beach trying to steal your snacks!
