Planning a self-drive trip along the Garden Route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth next month and trying to finalize our itinerary. We have about 6 days for the drive and want to make sure we hit the absolute best spots without rushing too much. What are the essential towns, nature reserves, and hidden gems we shouldn't miss along this stretch?

Six days is a bit tight for the full stretch, but totally doable if you skip a few smaller spots. Make sure to spend at least two nights in Knysna and definitely stop at the Tsitsikamma National Park for the suspension bridge!

Don't miss Wilderness for canoeing on the Touw River. It's an absolute hidden gem if you love nature and quiet water sports.

Plettenberg Bay is my absolute favorite. Robberg Nature Reserve has some of the best coastal hiking trails in the entire country.

Hermanus is technically just before the official Garden Route start, but if it's whale season, you absolutely have to stop there for a morning.

Make sure to book your accommodation in Storms River in advance. Staying right inside Tsitsikamma is a magical experience when the day-trippers leave.

Oudtshoorn and the Cango Caves are worth a slight detour inland if you can swing it on day two or three, but with only six days, you might want to stick strictly to the coastal route.

Stopping at Mossel Bay for the Diaz Museum complex is fun, but don't linger too long—push on to Wilderness or Knysna for a nicer evening vibe.

The Bloukrans Bridge bungee jump is terrifying, but even just walking out onto the viewing platform to watch people jump is worth the stop.

Eat as many local oysters as you can in Knysna. They are world-class and surprisingly affordable compared to Cape Town prices.

Jeffreys Bay is a must if you are into surf culture or just want to chill on some massive sandy beaches right before reaching Port Elizabeth.

Six days goes by fast because of all the winding mountain passes. Keep your driving distances short each day so you actually have time to enjoy the reserves.

Natures Valley is arguably the most pristine beach along the entire route. Grab a coffee at the little shop there and just take in the lagoon.
